What Are Eating Disorders?
Eating disorders are a lot more common that you might think. We all like to eat, it’s often one of the most pleasurable experiences in our day, so what constitutes an eating disorder? We all require food for energy and health but sometimes eating can become more than just a pleasurable experience or something we do to sustain energy and health. Some people can develop unusual or harmful relationships with food which are generally referred to as eating disorders. They often stem from other health or emotional issues such as low self-esteem, anxiety and depression.
Eating disorders can have a range of negative physical effects such as the obvious extreme weight loss and weight gain but can often be coupled with more serious consequences such as strain on our internal organs such as our liver and heart.
What causes eating disorders?
There are many different root causes to eating disorders so saying that there are one or two specific triggers is probably an over generalisation, but there is always a trigger such as traumatic events, depression, bereavement, anxiety disorders, peer pressure from friends and family about weight gain or eating habits, stress with exams or work related issues to name but a few.
Different types of eating disorders
Eating disorder is an umbrella term for unusual or harmful relationships with food. Common disorders include illnesses such as Anorexia, Bulimia and Binge eating disorder.
Can hypnotherapy help with eating disorders?
Hypnotherapy is not a cure, but it can certainly address the root causes and have a dramatic positive effect on the sufferer. It’s not an overnight fix, but it can reprogram our association with food by using various counselling techniques alongside hypnosis, as hypnosis places our minds in a very suggestible and programmable state, known as trance.
Hypnotherapists have extensive understanding of the root causes behind eating disorders and often they will use techniques such as regressive therapy to try and ascertain the root causes behind your eating disorder.
Hypnotherapy is a highly successful approach to using positive suggestion, subliminal programming and various therapies to improve factors such as self-esteem which can play a massive part in the manifestation of eating disorders. Continued sessions once the disorder is under control can also be very helpful by offering mental support, which a sufferer will need to avoid relapsing back into their former behaviour and relationship towards food.
